gam_server eating through cpu

I have discovered how to reproduce the CPU problem of gam_server. I use
several NFS shares (although samba / ssh shares probably cause the same
problem). Whenever I browse to a large folder on NFS (7000 files for
example) the CPU will jump to 25% and stay there for as long as the
folder is open. Killing gam_server has no effect, because it uses the
same amount of CPU as soon as it respawns.
As soon as I close that folder it is gone again. Since I donot need
nor want automatic detection of altered files (and having had similar
problems with FAM on Debian in the past) I decided to simply rename
gam_server, like this:
> sudo mv /usr/lib/gamin/gam_server /usr/lib/gamin/gam_server-disable
After killing gam_server one last time, it didn't respawn, and
everything still seems to work fine without it. Browsing large folders
works and even seems to be a bit faster with loading them.
In .xsession-errors I get messages like this now though:
> failed to find gam_server
> failed to exec (null)
> Failed to connect to socket /tmp/fam-john-
> kio (KDirWatch): WARNING: FAM connection problem, switching to polling.
Polling however seems to have far less effect on my system than gamin
ever did, so I will probably keep this setup.
