gam_server eating through cpu

some months ago i've symlinked /usr/lib/gamin/gam_server to /dev/null
(after moving the real binary) and i got the impression that gnome was
starting much slower..  later i've put it back like how it was before

is your action (above) from some howto ? just wondering
