GParted won't resize a FAT32 partition.

Thanks for the various suggestions.
I tried (among other things) Qtparted on an old copy of Knoppix, and that *did*
allow me to successfully resize the Windows FAT32 partition which GParted
wouldn't touch.
This is odd, given that all the tools I've tried are front ends for parted as
far as I know.
Odder still, now that I've resized it, GParted now happily offers me the option
to resize, which is exactly what I expected to be able to do at the start of
the process.
However, there is still a problem; neither GParted nor Qtparted appear to allow
me to expand the existing linux partition, towards the end of the disc, back
into the space freed by shrinking the FAT32 partition. Reading the FAQs
indicates that this is common to all the front ends for parted; they will allow
you to move partitions towards the end of the disc, but not back towards the
beginning.
Is there any way of doing this?
Neil
