If a debian person may be allowed to but in here, I have found that a
text login is preferable, for there's nothing like getting stuck in a
loop due to a misconfiguration. The text login is not so pretty, but
it's just as simple. 

To disable it, the OP might consider instead changing /etc/rc2.d/Sxpm
to Kxpm (or do it to kdm or gdm, if ubuntu uses them). This makes it
easier to undo if he changes his mind.
