Ubuntu text login

Chris,

Thanks for directing me to your "spicing up log in shells". Found it
interesting. 

Unfortunately, I'm setting ubuntu up for my wife, and so have to make
her life easy (in the sense of more GUI-oriented ;-)). While I am
personally keyboard/terminal-oriented, I don't run ubuntu myself. 

In the query I posted to the list, the problem was that the entire
desktop hung. I don't know if I've ever experienced that before, but
perhaps that's because not long after moving to Linux, I gave up on
desktop managers (use only a windows manager). I run a gnome app or
two, but not gnome (or kde) desktop. I've never understood the reason
for having a desktop manager, perhaps because I've avoided interacting 
applications, prefering a more modular world.
