As others have noted, xv itself is a bit long in the tooth and hard to
find packaged versions of these days. :-(
But like you, I was always a big fan of xv as well: I think it is quite
a credit to xv's developers that a program over 10 years old is still
preferable to most of the superficially glossier image viewers that have
come subsequent to it.
I did a fair bit of ploughing through the Ubuntu image-viewing packages
testing possible substitutes and the nearest equivalent that I could
find to xv is 'feh'.
feh isn't quite the same, but it has the features that _I_ need:
(although it doesn't have xv's image-editing capabilities)
* powerful control from the command line and keyboard
* ability to delete unwanted images while viewing in slideshow
* ability to show slideshows in random order from *recursive* directories
(it is simply *astounding* the number of more recent image viewers that
are limited to only showing images from within the current directory)
feh might not be suitable for your needs, but it might be worth a try?
