Sound: no sound

When sound doesn't work, the last two lines are:
 
mixers:
0: Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev 4
 
        My sound card is a Creative Labs Soundblaster 16 PCI and seems to
be identified as  Ensoniq AudioPCI.  In the sound preferences utility I
have the choice of two devices:  0 being Ensoniq AudioPCI and 1 being
Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev 4 (which seems to be devoted to capture).  The
last line of sndstat seems to show the Cirrus Logic device as device 0.

        I can't get the sound to work again so I can't tell you what the
last line in /proc/asound/oss/sndstat is with it working.

        I hope this tells you something useful.
