I *think* this is an occasion where brute force tends to win, Richard.

# dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_1%
#3a7.1.1ubuntu6_i386.deb

followed by 

# apt-get -f install

should do the trick (he says hopefully).
