Hmmm.. when dealing with mechanical engineering problems I'm a fan of
the 14oz or 14lb hammer used in the right way with the appropriate
skill. I was taught by a lot of mechanical engineers. I'm good at
it. However, when dealing with computers or software I prefer the
carefully shaded candle in the corner of the room. Tried what you
suggested and it did this......

dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_1%3a7.1.1ubuntu6_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 235970 files and directories currently
installed.)
Preparing to replace x11-common 7.0.0-0ubuntu45
(using .../x11-common_1%3a7.1.1ubuntu6_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement x11-common ...
Replacing files in old package xinit ...
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
trying to overwrite `/usr/X11R6/bin', which is also in package
iglooftp
Setting up x11-common (7.1.1ubuntu6) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init.d/x11-common ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/X11/Xsession ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/X11/Xsession.options ...
System startup links for /etc/init.d/x11-common already exist.

After which it did this ..... asking me to run 'apt-get dist-upgrade'
when Synaptic couldn't cope with it. Didn't want to do this either
but seems like all I can do. Using Adept for the upgrade this is
what happened - same with apt-get dist-upgrade......

apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done

The following packages will be REMOVED
  kdelibs-bin libgcj7 libnewt0.51 libtasn1-2-dev libvte4 libxine-main1

960 upgraded, 113 newly installed, 24 to remove and 28 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/645MB of archives.
After unpacking 171MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y

So, it's not good but things might be going in the right direction.
