Are there softmodem solutions supported in any ubuntu repository?

Thanks to the facilities of apt-cdrom, I think Debian distros are the 
*easiest* to keep up to date without a high speed connection (so long as 
you have a download location/friend).  and it's very easy to buy the 
complete repositories on a series of cd's / dvd's.

As far as modem compatibility, I can buy a Linux compatible Serial 
external modem at Tigerdirect for $40 CA.. yes it sucks that you spend 
the extra money and don't use the modem that comes with your pc, but I 
think the reduction of frustration and the purity of open source system 
are worth such a small investment in hardware.
