Are there softmodem solutions supported in any ubuntu repository?

IMHO, if there is no viable solution for an open source softmodem,
(and since it's not a Ubuntu fault but a producer fault) I think you
should go out and buy an external modem. If you care about your
freedom. But it is just my opinion.

Why don't I do the same? Well, not right now. Because I've got another
doubt. My laptop has no COM port, I should buy a USB modem.
How can I be sure that a USB modem is not a softmodem and that
it is compatible (supported) with linux (ubuntu) ?

So, for the moment I will go on trying to enable my internal softmodem.
Thanks to all for the many links suggested.
