I have to agree that xubuntu works just fine... recanting my previous
posts in this thread. Turns out that the problem that I was having on
the old HP Pavilion 4440 333Mhz/256Mb/3.2Gb system was a faulty
motherboard. Seems that the MB is bad and burns out any memory chip in
slot 2, so the computer was actually falling back to 128Mb rather than
the newly installed 256Mb. The computer has now been relegated to a
print server only...
That said, I do not recommend trying to run even xubuntu on such a
system (333Mhz/128Mb/3.2Gb), it is simply unusable. I run the full
Ubunto Gnome desktop on a 300Mhz/256Mb/4Gb test server and it runs just
fine. I'll rip out gnome this weekend and try xubuntu on it this weekend.
