How do I start kbuntu on a ubuntu system

I think you have a misunderstanding about the *ubuntu  distros.

Ubuntu  is a complete linux system using Gnome as the default desktop manager.

Kubuntu  is a complete linux system using KDE as the default desktop manager.

You should install ONE or the OTHER   depending on what you want for a 
desktop.

You don't install  kubuntu on a ubuntu system....   it would/should  overlay 
everything and you'd end up with a kubuntu system.

It is hard to say what you did exactly, but if I were you, I would start over 
an install   Kubuntu   - - - -    only.
