Ubuntu has a firewall named iptables installed. And by default, it has 0
 open ports. So unless you install a server application - like Apache or
MySQL, I don't believe you need anything else.

But if you still want a to configure it yourself, try FWBuilder or
Firestarter. Firestarter's best for newbies and it even has a monitor
option so you can check all inbound and outbound connections in real-time.

FYI, I have never configured iptables since Dapper, and I'm running a
couple of server applications. It works well for me. I do, however, run
a port scanner[1] every now and then though.
