can't load - can't activate virtual sys.

I'm driving a Windows XP. I've download the ubuntu iso - check-sumed it -
burnt it to disk and check-sumed the result.   My cpu wont't load it - says
it cant see it.   I've downloaded the parts for a virtual system and that
doesn't  run either.   My computer says it can't read the iso.   What
software am I missing.    Is there any freeware that will solve my
problem?   Different question - just what IS my problem?    Thanks   --
