$ apt-cache show samba4
...
Description: LanManager-like file server for Unix (version 4)
The Samba software suite is a collection of programs that
implements the SMB protocol for unix systems, allowing you to serve
files to Windows, NT, OS/2 and DOS clients, as well as
run as a domain controller for Active Directory.
.
These packages contain snapshot versions of Samba 4, the next-generation
version of Samba. These should be considered _experimental_, and should
not be used in production. In particular, no guarantees are made with
regard to upgrades between versions
So I don't think you want try samba4 unless you know what you are doing
and are testing.

You don't mention if you are using standard Ubuntu (gnome) or kbuntu
(kde), or xubutu, etc. Nor do you say which version of Ubuntu you are
using (8.04, 9.04, 9.10, 10.4). Answers will vary depending.
But assuming that you are using standard Ubuntu; open Nautilus
(Places|Home) and right click the folder that you wish to share. Click
Properties then Share. You'll then see the option to 'Allow other users
to create and delete files in this folder' click.
However be aware that by doing that, the XP machine now has r/w
authority in that folder on your Ubuntu machine. Are you *sure* you wish
to allow that?
