Sound not working, how to troubleshoot

I agree, on the fifty machines I take care of, sound problems were all fixed 
just by the installation of pavucontol.  Really, if we are going to use Pulse 
Audio, it would seem required that you included its control!  Especially as 
the default settings have the sound turned off!!
