Possible Hardware Damage from 11.04

I am not say it is so but there was a report of the issues with a Sony Vio and then yesterday, something in my HP zd8000 video display system is now broken, something to do with the resolution of the display, after only a day of running 11.04.  The only way I can use 11.04 on it now is to connect a second monitor to it but then it isn't a laptop anymore.  11.04 won't even display on the built in monitor.  During POST and boot selection, the laptop's monitor is an "overscan" mode where you don't even see the bottom third of the screen on the screen, very strange.  I've tried reseting the bios, something with hardware.  Prior to this event, this was a very reliable and stable laptop and was running 10.04 for the past year.
