Possible Hardware Damage from 11.04

Having used an HP Laptop for several years it sounds to me like your
graphics "card" is in the first stage of complete failure.  I had a
similar problem [fortunately under extended warranty] and HP had to
replace the entire mobo to fix it as the graphics circuitry is built
onto the mobo.
As a side-note the machine finally went toes up when the power supply
section failed.
