Removing pulseaudio

I think I just need ALSA.  I have a very simple requirement, namely to be
able to play via USB.

I don't find Pulseaudio easy to use. The Pulseaudio volume
control program doesn't seem to recognise my default USB sound card, so I
have no idea how to control it.  It used to work, but has recently stopped
working for no reason I can think of - maybe something got upgraded.
