Hi,

Don't which to preach to the converted, and waited until I got home to
check my post ;)
But when I plug an audio out device in via usb all I have to do is go
into 'Sound Settings' and select the output devise from the bar on the left;

I am running 12.04 LTS fully updated as of 8,30am GMT, and I have two
different usb devices (1 Logitech audio hub <laptop speakers> & 1 cheap
usb to 3.5mm jack convertor left over from an old machine) both of which
appear & disappear when plugged in, and give output (& input in the case
of usb-3.5mm jack)

If you are on raring ringtail then I would suspect updates but on
precise all is as expected
