anything like domain login for Ubuntu?

Does Edubuntu do this? I've never used it, know nothing about it, except
that I seem to think I once read that you set it up on a central server
then use it with diskless workstations set up to boot from the network.

I may be totally wrong but the project appears to be alive and well so
might be worth a read.
