I have v1.25.0 running very smoothly on 12.04. I have 4 ip cams recording
24/7 with no issues. However, I'm not sure I could add another cam to this
i3-2100T CPU.

Do you feel the problem is with the type of stream the camera provides, or
with zoneminder, or Ubuntu? You haven't provided much info

As for tips: 

Zoneminder sucks at motion detection/motion recording. It uses too much cpu
time, and misses too many events. Much better to record constantly and erase
events as the disk fills up. I get a little over a week of worth of events
on the 4TB drive I use.
