I ultimately used the Synaptic Manager to free up plenty of space. I was
more comfortable being able to see and then review what I was deleting
(being an old codger with diminishing eyesight) prior to finally going
ahead.
Thanks to all for your patience, time and effort.
I did initially copy and paste the command script to eliminate old kernels
and headers, but that did not work, And rather than ask for more of your
time, I went ahead with the above Synaptic approach.
FYI:
I copied and pasted the command script "ls /boot" and did not succeed in
eliminating any of the older kernels:
rsm at rsm-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge
linux-image-2.6.32-{{24..35},37,41}-generic
[sudo] password for rsm:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-headers-generic: Depends: linux-headers-2.6.32-58-generic but it is
not going to be installed
linux-image-generic: Depends: linux-image-2.6.32-58-generic but it is not
going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or
specify a solution).

After that I ran the ls /boot command and came up with the following:

Again, thanks to all for your assistance.
