I think a straight install of Xubuntu will give you a lighter operating
system, but I am no expert. I have a laptop similar to yours and I have
Xubuntu and Ubuntu (both 12.04) and it runs noticeably faster on Xubuntu,
Lubuntu is about the same. There are other ubuntu based systems that are
very light also. Xubuntu has Software Center.
