If you can't get Deja Dup to work, you might want to take a look at
Back In Time (package: backintime-gnome). It's an easy to use GUI that
uses rsync to actually make the backups, can make encrypted backups if
you also install encfs, and remote backups if sshfs is installed.

You can get it to back up to a USB drive, as long as the drive is
mounted first. I would probably format the USB stick with a file system
that supports all the regular Linux attributes, such as ext4 - I think
you can do this with GParted if you do not know how to do it from the
command line.

Another thing I would *strongly* recommend is that you try to restore
files from one of your backups regularly - a backup isn't much good if
it can't be used to recover from.
