Okay then...
One partial update, was deselecting the update components that did not
include the name firefox - so as to upgrade firefox, and nothing else.
I deselected the Ubuntu base part, as that required about 500 of the
600 or700MB of free space, which is not available.
I do not remember what other components, exactly, were to be updated,
although, from menory, some Perl stuff was there.
So, I did it with each step involving what appeared to be related components.
But, and, I emphasise, I believe that I explicitly stated that the
progressive update in parts, was done on my souper dooper computer,
and, not the one that was harmed by attempting the full software
update.
