The only desktop environment that works is Ubuntu on Wayland.

Aren't all the others using X?

Doesn't that point to an issue with X?

Ubuntu on Wayland allow me to enter password to start Synaptic. No other
desktop, if it starts, will allow that.  Xubuntu and XFCE don't get me
past login.

What about reinstalling XFCE?
