I don't want to be a PITA but can you please, _please_ try to use the
names of the actual desktops? I am finding it very confusing to switch
between the desktop and the distro all the time especially as you're
not running the original distro any more.

I am not sure what works or not, because of this switching.

Won't help X problems.

Did you try the /etc/X11/xorg.conf thing I suggested?

If not, try it.
