In the late 1990s ASUS was definitely one of the desktop motherboard
vendors of choice.

I rarely go near non-name-brand laptops, though.

I don't like HP or Dell laptops much. I have had 2 Toshibas, one of
which died quite spectacularly, the other of which was slightly
problematic for many years but did keep working until I sold it, over
a decade old.

I currently have a very Sony Vaio that I recently bought cheap. It's a
sub-netbook:

(No, not subnotebook, they're common. This is an Atom netbook that's
about half the usual size.)

It won't boot Haiku or ReactOS. Win10 is too slow to be usable.
Xubuntu worked fine but was slow. Over the weekend, in bed with a bad
cold, I reformatted it with Devuan, which was hard work but it's now
working well.

All of which confirms my belief that Thinkpads are the only way to go.
