Please bottom-post on mailing lists. Your reply should go _under_ the
trimmed text you're replying to.

When you try, does the screen blink as it tries to change modes?

How about if you switch virtual consoles? Ctrl+Alt+F2-F6 should work.
Try the same username/password there.

Perhaps you ran something as root and no longer own all the files in
your home directory.

Find your username and what group you are in, and in your home
directory, on a vconsole or by ssh, try resetting it:

chown -r $username *

And for good measure:

chown -r $username .*
