Ubuntu desktop - can't login

I had exactly the same problem like you some times ago.
Eventually the problem magically disappeared, so I can not give you any real 
advice ..

However, what always worked and allowed to to log into a GUI:
When booting I selected:
     Advanced options for Ubuntu
         recovery mode
             resume

After this the system starts into "normal" GUI mode, and I could login normally.
As said, after some times (and apt upgrades) everything went to normal again.
