login always returns to login

I presume you have already done a full upgrade using
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
if not then try that first.

Otherwise, if you click the cog on the logon screen next to your name
you will get a set of options for GUI selection.  Which one is
selected and what happens if you try the others?
