login always returns to login

I would have to agree with the direction that Colin is moving in, as
this sounds very similar to a few other issues I have encountered in
the past. I bet selecting the exact opposing option that is currently
selected in the gear menu at the login screen will fix this, but if it
doesn't it could have something to do with xauth. let us know how it
goes.
