OK. I have no experience of big US vendors, and where I live (Czechia)
there aren't really PC superstores as such. There are some
general-electronics places but -- like the UK ones -- they're only any
use if you know exactly what you want.
I got my Lexmark E120N printer off Freecycle in London. The chap also
gave me an original IBM PS/2 Model M keyboard -- I'm typing on it now!
It was 31 years old this March. I told him it was an IBM (the badge
had come off) and was worth money, but he said I could have it anyway.
He gave me a chip to tape over some contacts on a refilled toner
cartridge, because this is one of those annoying printers that
digitally records the "mileage" of the cartridge and won't print any
more pages once the cart _should_ be empty, even if you refill it.
But earlier in lockdown #1 I ordered a refilled/remanufactured
cartridge from a local cart-refilling shop here in Prague. It was
about $15, it came fast, it works perfectly and the prints look great.
So in general this to me reinforces my opinion that if you have the
option, go to small specialist businesses, not the big retail
generalists. You get better service, you help a small business owner
not a giant conglomerate, and the value for money is often good
anyway.
Me, I prefer separate devices: mono printer, colour printer, and
scanner. It's cheaper to get quality kit that way, refills and
consumables are *much* cheaper, and driver support is easier on
dedicated devices. This works for me.
But if you are desperate for space, and really want an all-in-one,
then IMHO you will get better life from a scanner/laser and a separate
inkjet if you _need_ colour. Mono laser print is much better quality,
and it's cheaper to run, faster, works well on cheap paper. Save
inkjets for colour work and get one with separate C/Y/M/K colour tanks
so that you don't need to replace them all at the same time.

Glad to be of service.
