Normally at this point it hasn't created any partitions yet.

"Main partition" is not a Linux term. Do you mean the root partition?
If so, that is very very big.
In the region of 10× what I'd normally use.

Did you Google this before you asked?
ZFS partitions cannot be shrunk. The filesystem does not support that.
Nothing can do it. Same with XFS, IIRC.

be to find out why before asking, no?

Sure. Create your own. "Do something else" in most installers.
