Hi Mark,
Not presenting a solution but a tool: USBView. It is in the package
repositories as 'usbview'. Here is its description:

USBView is a small GTK+ application to show what the device tree of
the USB bus looks like. It shows a graphical representation of the
devices that are currently plugged in, showing the topology of the
USB bus. It also displays information on each individual device on
the bus.

I have noticed, on occasion that when I plugged in a USB memory stick that
I'd have to go to a file manager and look at the memory stick there before
the system would mount it. So I tried again on this computer (running
Ubuntu 22.04.4 x86_64) and it currently automounts without having to go
into a file manager... Can't explain that...

HTH,

Ian
