Latest NVidia driver f-d up my video

I've done this before, but I keep forgetting because I rarely need it.
The latest Software Updater installed the 6.8.0.40 Kernel on my
desktop, along with the latest Nvidia driver. When I rebooted, it hung
looking for a GPU or graphics card or something like that and never
recovered.
I don't mind using the consoles, but they come up in my screen's
native 2k res and print so tiny I can barely read it.
How can I disable the Nvidia driver so I can get my updated GUI
display back again?
I rebooted to the previous kernel & driver - 6.5.0.45 and I'm not sure
where the nvidia driver is or what version, but I think I was using
the nouveau driver as I don't like the way the Nvidia drivers
invariably screw up my GUI (console 7). I'd just as soon not get the
Nvidia drivers at all.
I looked through syslog a bit, but there are 1900+ lines at one time
stamp and I don't see the specific problem or how it resolves, if it
resolves.
Can't experiment more now, but I can post more later if there's no
simple workaround - disabling the Nvidia driver.
Reminder, anyone?
Many, many thanks.
Mark
