I thought I'd add this in case there's a similarity between my
Kubuntu and the OP's Xubuntu. In Kubuntu, there's a setting in the
"Startup and Shutdown" section of its settings that offers these
options:
When logging in:
( ) Restore previous saved session
( ) Restore manually saved session
( ) Start with an empty session
The first option is selected by default and I always immediately go
into settings and change that to "Start with an empty session" after
installing Kubuntu to make sure that all boots are clean.
If a similar setting is available in Xubuntu, it might be worth a try
to see if that stops the behavior.
