When I reboot I get a fresh login screen for several seconds?? before the reboot starts

Turn off quietness: take "quiet" out of kernel command line.  This will result 
in a "noisy" boot and shutdown process. (I *always* turn off quiet on machines 
I install Linux on, at least those I use myself.)
