When I reboot I get a fresh login screen for several seconds? before the reboot starts

Try the log checking again.  This time watch the time to the second at
which you hit the button, how long it is till the login screen
appears, and when it disappears.  Maybe video it with your phone so
you  can go back and check the log to see exactly what is going on at
that point.  Set the time on the PC to show seconds before you hit the
button, or bring up a clock.
