Don't waste your time with Bluetooth. The Linux implementations I have 
tried are unusable and plugging them together never seems to do anything 
meaningful.

Install an SFTP client on your phone (I use AndFTP on my Android) and 
make sure the sftp server is running on your desktop/laptop (sudo apt 
install openssh-server). Then set up AndFTP to connect to your 
computer's IP address. There must be an SFTP client for iPhone somewhere.

I use this method all the time and it's never failed. But both phone and 
computer do need to be on the same network unless you want to go playing 
around with gateways.
