Linux image 6.8.0-31 won't boot

I upgraded Xubuntu to 24.04 a couple of days ago and all seemed to go
well until the following day when my Thinkpad X1 Carbon failed to boot.
There aren't any error messages,  just a blank screen. The laptop will
boot if I select the previous linux image 6.5.0-35 from the grub menu.

I'm happy to continue with this extra boot step but I'm concerned that a
future update may install another linux image that may also not boot and
I won't have access to the linux image that will boot now.

What is my best course of action? I cannot see any mention of this
problem in the release notes.

By the way, I have access to a Lenevo Ideapad that does boot with the
6.8.0-31 image.
