This is also causing me to rethink the sequence of commands I've
recently been using all together in one step. I'm pasting my new
3-step sequence below to check if it would be more reasonable in
light of what Jeffrey Walton said:

1. Check for and grab any available updates:

    sudo apt update && apt full-upgrade && snap refresh

2. Reboot if prompted or go to the next step.

3. Tidy up:

    sudo apt update && apt autoremove && apt clean && apt purge
