put cursor on found text in less or vi?

I've been using vi for over 40 years. I've never seen that kind of
behavior on a standard / search. When I use that, the cursor always
lands on the first character of the search pattern. My problem is
finding the cursor on-screen in the thick of the text - it's not
always easy with my eyes.
What kind of search are you doing? Do you have it set to ignore case,
or does that matter?
