I have occasionally had to open very large text files in Emacs without 
any trouble (it does courteously ask "Do you *really* want to open this 
500TB file?").

I hadn't heard of Geany. It sounds interesting, but I rarely need files 
that size — editing features (per filetype) are much more important for 
what I do.
