Thankfully, things have evolved since then. I use Git mainly for provenance
and as an archive from which I can resurrect code if I find the need. I
find VCSs in general are very good for that if you're working on your own.

My first foray into programming was with a TI-99/4a. We couldn't afford the
8" disk drive, but one could use a cassette player although I never did.
Whenever the thing was unplugged, I just started again because back then I
was more interested in what this thing could do than what I could do with
it.
