securing new install.. thoughts/opinions

Hi.

Setting up/installing fresh ubuntu. Looking to get input from the list
on securing the system. It will be single user, connected to the net.

Will be used for "testing' dev/webaps.

The device will have multiple browsers, with ad-block extensions.

Different sites discuss:
 selinux
 malware protection
 rkhunter
 clamav
 port lockdown
 ssh/securing as needed

 frequent backup

Are there particular apps you recommend, sites to follow, etc.
