securing new install.. thoughts/opinions

Will the machine have a public IP address or will it be behind a firewall 
router (eg a typical home [wifi] router)?  If the latter, you probably don't 
need to too much beyond the standard install, depending on who else is on your 
LAN -- family members? (un)trustworthy office/room-mates? nosy neighbors?, 
etc.

Note if you plan on using it at an Internet cafe or othewr public WiFi, that 
might also make a difference as well.
