XFCE4 dies on login (LXC, Proxmox, 22.04LTS)

If anyone is using xfce4, and has any ideas about the following, do
please get in touch:
I'm trying to get an LXC container with xfce4 working in Proxmox,
following this description:
https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/how-to-create-a-template-for-lxc-ubuntu-desktop-with-sound.73695/
I've adjusted things for 22.04LTS; the template is Ubuntu 24.04LTS
standard (no GUI).
When I connect to the running container via RDP, I get a good login
screen, but immediately after entering the (correct) credentials the
window manager dies. Important to note - because I do get the login
screen, I am 99% sure this is not about connectivity.
The Proxmox server and the RDP client are on different systems in the
same LAN.
There is nothing in the container's logs that seems useful - syslog
does note that the window manager died suspiciously quickly and
suggests there may be a problem with the window manager configuration,
but gives no hint as to what that problem might be.
I've found others online who have had similar issues, but the solutions
they've found do not help in my case:
- put the xrdp user in the ssl-certs group (done)
- I am not logged in to the container anywhere else
- various GNOME-related things (I'm not trying to use GNOME)
I have not yet tried fiddling with .xsession or startwm.sh.
Any ideas gratefully received, ESPECIALLY from people who are *actually
using xfce4*.
Regards, K.
